Nothing in the world changes a child’s life like providing an education.

Especially in the northern region of Nepal which includes some of the poorest of Nepal's poor. Many families cannot read and write due to a lack of education beyond elementary school.

Not to mention being one of the highest sex trafficking areas in the world per capita.

These are two of those families.

Mount Everest Region Education Cooperative (MEREC) is a non-profit organization aimed at fighting the war on human trafficking.

We have already started the process of rescuing children who come from the most challenged backgrounds These children are mainly from the north and north-west areas of Nepal and are very likely to fall victim to trafficking at a very tender age.

These children, especially the girls, are vulnerable to trafficking to India and abroad. To accommodate them, our biggest need is building a dormitory for the students we rescue from the areas where they are being sold or trafficked.

Our plan is to have a separate building near our school with full boarding and lodging facilities.

About Saint Joseph’s

St. Joseph’s was established in 2002. The school was started 20 years ago with 44 students. It is located on the outskirts of Kathmandu in a village called Goldhunga (presently known as Tarakeshwor).

The people in this area of Nepal are mostly dependent on agriculture. Their annual income is extremely low, and most of them live below the poverty level. It's considered the poorest of the poor in Nepal, and education is obviously difficult to come by.

St. Joseph’s current enrollment is 585 children. They have 32 staff members, 2 drivers, and 4 assistants. It educates students from 3 to 18 years of age. More importantly, it provides free education and uniforms for children whose families can’t afford to send them.

This is why we need you to consider supporting at least 1 child. $400 per year will cover the cost of their education. Another $400 per year will cover their room and board.

What We’ve Achieved

The school provides sports like football, basketball, taekwondo, and badminton. Our students are not just excelling at education but are excellent at sports and other curricular activities. They show a keen interest in inter-school elocutions, debates, and other sports activities and have won numerous prizes and medals.

Best of all, our SLC batch (tenth-grade students evaluated by the government of Nepal) has had a tremendous performance. For the last twelve years, all the tenth-grade students have obtained marks above 80% and some above 90%.

This has raised the reputation of the school in the community, and the enrollment is grown to 585, with the potential to increase.

More than 85% percent of the students could and would continue their studies even after their 10th year if more scholarships were available. This would be a big achievement and a proud moment for St. Joseph.

St. Joseph’s mission is to educate as many children as possible who have no support or ability to pay. They are consistently rescuing children from the most remote parts of Nepal and bringing them back to the school to educate and empower them as well as develop their capacity to continue this legacy.

The school just recently rescued seven children from one of the most remote and poorest communities. Three of them were about to be sold, but gratefully they were able to rescue them, and now, they are happy, safe, learning, and staying at St. Joseph’s
